If people are not familiar with the lyrics the sudden mention of dogs and in particular the mastiff hound makes them think they misheard the lyrics, but these are actually correct. The idea of dogs as worthless men looking for an easy lay is carried throughout the entire song.
The song also remarks on the larger question of how can relationships be successful. He says that “so much depends on the weather” to show that there are so many factors in relationships that it is impossible to predict what will happen. When he asks “is it raining in your bedroom” he is wondering how the girl is getting on without him. Were the dogs able to capture her or was she strong enough to escape them? These lyrics can also easily be misunderstood if the listener does not understand the metaphors used throughout the song.
