Su-Su-Sudio: What Exactly Does Phil Collins Mean?

Su-Su -Sudio….What is Phil Collins talking about in that song? I’ve been a Phil Collins fan for quite a long time and have heard most of his music. Although I have not followed his personal life very closely, I would have to guess that “Sussudio” was a former lover. Singing the line “Su-Su-Sudio” is just for musical rhythm or emphasis, adding an extra syllable for beat like some singers have sung “Ba-ba-baby”. That would be my explanation. I mean it is an unusual name to say the least of course, and we don’t know if he made it up or if it really is someone’s name. Only Phil can really answer that one. I mean it makes sense in the context of the rest of the song, where he sings, “There’s a girl whose been on my mind, Sussudio”… Many singers infuse their songs with real or fictional names of lovers or former lovers to make their songs more meaningful and I’m sure Phil Collins is one of them. In one of his songs, the name of which escapes me right now, someone named “Suni” is referred to. Again, I have believed that to be a former lover of his.
